Even better would be an option to only ever have to answer this dialog once - why do I have to waste time with a trivial decision like this repeatedly? I should be able to set default behaviors for all these annoying dialog boxes that I'm answering the same way 99% of the time.
I understand that this sort of crappy interface design is deeply embedded in at least the Windows way of doing things but, in a time when I have hundreds of gigabytes available to me, I don't see the usefulness of worrying about a few thousand bytes several times a day. If I want to clean up my temp files one day, I'll do that then. In his book on user interface design (The Inmates are Running the Asylum), Alan Cooper has an anecdote about how Jeff Bezos of Amazon had to overrule his programmers' habits when he came up with the idea of one-click checkout - the programmers added an "Are you sure?" dialog box after the single click - see " http://books.google.com/books?id=04cFCVXC_AUC&pg=PA109&lpg=PA109&dq=%22one+click%22+inmates+running+asylum&source=web&ots=jeCcW2n5mR&sig=4sSAfmB5qFYWqd_1bs85qBp5Sdc" . They defeated the purpose of the idea by following convention. It's kind of sad that such a simple notion is seen as so innovative that it could be patented (though this patent is under dispute).
