[Jgeneral] why zipped PDFs on wiki?

On the wiki Books page http://www.jsoftware.com/jwiki/Books  a number of
the books are linked to zipped PDFs.  
 
Zipping the PDFs reduces the size by very little (8-15% for 500KB
files), while making the books more difficult to access. Is there
another reason that the PDFs can't be linked directly?
