There's also buzz about Sybase IQ.  From Wikipedia's entry at 
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sybase_IQ  :

   As a column-oriented DBMS, Sybase IQ stores 
   data tables as sections of columns of data 
   rather than as rows of data.
