This may not be necessary - but "user" points to an area J puts my stuff and "User" points to the area where I want it (and where I've always kept it). I made the distinction a couple of years ago based on the suggestion of someone at Jsoftware but it may no longer be relevant.
Looking at what J puts in "user", it's mostly my session logs and some configuration information - not anything I really care about. My "User" area, however, gets backed-up frequently. It dates from where I first installed J many years ago: it used to be near the system directories but those have all moved away. The distinction might be relevant if anyone else ever used my machine but, since my family now has one computer per person - wow, they really are "personal" computers, even the Mac - it really isn't.
