Martin,

I don't think you are doing anything "wrong". There is no easy way to
do that with J. Instead you are encouraged to save .ijs files where
you create short scripts and many people use project manager to create
bigger projects.

There is also a file somewhere at least for the jconsole version of J
named .history which retains all you .ijx inputs.
