Just in case anyone else has encountered this:

Platform

Mac OS X 10.5.6
java version "1.5.0_16"

Problem

Fonts in J forms (and other apps such as SPSS) display too large for buttons
etc. resulting in abbreviation of labels. This can be seen, for example, in
the J package manager form.

Solution

Basically, you have to revert to using the earlier version of Java. This
can be done by starting up the Java Preferences application in
/Applications/Utilities/Java. In the the General pane under Java
application versions, reorder the listed J2SE versions. In my case, this
meant putting J2SE 1.4.2 above J2SE 5.0 in the list presented.
