Unlike window,  video card driver in linux may provide and install
their own version of opengl driver.  To identify if this might be the
cause, you can replace ati driver with vesa (generic vga) driver from
linux.  I can not remember the exact procedure to do it in a gui
manner, but it should be accessible from desktop menu bar.  And then
re-install mesa opengl driver again.  You can also look at the error
log in the file ~/.xsession-errors if there are some relevant message.
