Out of pure interest, is it possible to have a front wrapper that
detects whether one is using a 32 bit Java and throw a nicer error than
currently? I would take it that a lot of people who want to use "J"
probably aren't the type who automatically associate the message with
the solution...

Thank you for informing me about forumsearch.  I had searched support 
pages, and
browsed through message titles over the last year, but hadn't paid enough
attention to "mac install fails", which recommends a change to 32-bit Java
preference.  Problem solved!
