Have a look at this: http://www.gaertner.de/~neitzel/img/zaurus.jpg

This is J running on a Sharp SL-C3000 Zaurus. 416MHz ARM processor,
a small but usable keyboard (I'd term it "three finger keyboard"),
480x640 VGA colour screen which I usually use not with X11 but
boring console screens. 30 rows by 80 columns is just fine for J.
Attach a USB keyboard if you feel so. When not travelling, I usually
log _into_ the Zaurus remotely. Sticking out on the right is a
Compact Flash WLAN card. 4GB micro drive, SD card slot. I'm
running OpenBSD on it, instead of the Linux it came with.

I have seen a few of the recent gadgets and so far nothing in the
"sub netbook class" comes close to provide a usable J. I've seen
mobile phones such as the Palm Pre's, Nokias, the iphone, and they
all are too tiny for J input and/or output.

And as you said: Being able to tinker with J everywhere, anytime,
is just great.

J port for the Zaurus done within 30 minutes during a train ride.

Another RISC machine I ported J to:

This is my SGI Octane with a MIPS R12000 processor. Not quite as
portable -- to quote the Owner's manual: "lifting an Octane is a
two-person job".
