Thank you everybody for your answers.

I understand that opengl works under linux for other users, so it's
either a j bug that becomes manifest with my configuration, or a bug of
the vesa libraries.

Because I am just starting learning J (out of curiosity), and lack of
opengl is no showstopper, I'll skip all opengl material and move on. At
some point a hardware or software upgrade may fix the issue.
