There is another good reason not mentioned on that page:
You can use normal names to specify locales (eg. name__y)
but you can't do that with primitives (eg. name__y. is a spelling error)

Also, corresponding global names (although discouraged) can still be easily
accessed via y__ etc. so even though the change is not compatible,
it doesn't remove any functionality.
