Bill; I think you are right .. I will hang tough and see what happens with J7 gtk; maybe the problem will just go away.
My display card is a ATI Mobility Radeon 3470 which should (according to the Ubuntu folks) work correctly with their tested driver. I will not do that again in a hurry!
