Ian Clark suggested a fix to Snow Leopard challenges for J602 in the wiki 
http://www.jsoftware.com/jwiki/System/Installation/Mac/MacSnowLeopardInstallBug 
. It is not exactly the problem you are describing but may move you along the 
path. I have seen the 'failed to get  Java metrics' message as well 
occasionally, but the second attempt at opening J usually works. This is of 
course is in contravention of the universal rule of repeating the same actions 
and expecting different results.
