Automated systems have mysterious failure modes.

For example, past versions of the manual instructions failed, but at least
this way the users were engaged and could examine the steps and find
failure points.

Another variation that fails when automated is the partially connected
machine.  Here, starting jgtk does not mean that anything can be updated
automatically.
