Í faintly think I remember having a tool to investigate what operations had
been called using an APL2 system.

You would turn on a debug and then you could see what lines of functions
had been called and how often.

I am pretty sure to remember being able to see the results  of the analysis
and it turned out that only a very few lines were taking most of the time,
memory and cpu.
