My fault (of course). Upon trying to load startup_jhs.ijs manually, I looked more closely at the file in Finder and realized the error: I had inadvertently typed a comma instead of a period to separate the extension "ijs". Drat the small fonts on my hi-res iMac screen and my older eyes.
Thanks for the patience of those who responded trying to help me fix this. (This reminds me of the time years ago that a student brought a FORTRAN program to me that would not run properly. I read it time and time again. And on about the 5th reading I realized he had typed an O instead of a 0 in one spot.)
