Just in case people thought they had everything figured out and
everything was in it's place, Sun comes out with a completely different
view.

Sun Microsystem's Executive Vice-President for Software Development,
Jonathon Schwartz, told an eWeek correspondant that Linux belonged on
the desktop and that "We do not believe that Linux plays a role on the
server. Period."

Although exactly the reverse of conventional industry wisdom, Schwartz's
comments are not suprising since it is in Sun's best interest to sell
Solaris for servers, not Linux. Stir in the fact that Sun has just
publicly launched it's new 'Madhatter' desktop, which is a hybrid
offering of Linux components such as Gnome, with more traditional
Solaris bits. Eh, Voila!

There is no doubt that Solaris is still a better OS for high-end
enterprise class (and higher) servers. But to say that Linux plays a
role on servers seems to be a bit rhetorical.
