He's been a Republican in name only, seldom supporting the party in
his voting record. You might think of him as a reverse (if less
articulate) Zell Miller, since Mr. Miller purports to have the best
interests of Democrats at heart but supports (some) Republican
enterprises.

And, I believe, you are wrong about him being thrown to the wolves.
He's never been very acceptable in the Republican Party. The reason
this is happening to Mr. Specter now is purely self abuse: he opened
his big mouth at the wrong time to let out his true feelings which run
counter to the Republican majority mission, and now he is attempting
damage control. If all the cards were reversed, Democrats would be
just as quick to crush someone who did not (at least) give token
support to the cause.

In groups as diverse as the Democratic or Republican Party, there are
always going to be a few square pegs who don't fit the round holes.
