Thanks for the valuable information, Lonni !

I'm going to be visiting quite a few people while I am there -- my ex-boss, several friends and a distant cousin in San Jose. My wife actually has some work thing going on in Sunnyvale, so I'm tagging along. I've never actaully been in San Franciso, except in transit at the airport. I remember distances being a lot longer in America than here in Singapore -- a commute of 20 minutes is considered long here. I guess I'll get there first, then figure things out later.

Thanks and Regards,
pascal chong

Hi Pascal!
Unfortunately, most traveling around the bay area is best accomplished by car. In San Francisco itself, public transportation is fairly reliable & efficient. However, outside of the city proper, taking a bus will mean you spend much of your day sitting on and/or waiting for the bus.

There is caltrain (http://www.caltrain.com) which is a train line that runs from San Francisco to San Jose, and is fairly efficient & reliable, but that will likely not get you to your final destination.

Taxis do exist, but they're rather expensive, so unless your employer is going to be reimbursing you, i'd strongly advise against them.

There is also the BART trainline that runs from half way down the peninsula up through san francisco, and to many points in the east bay, but that won't get you to sunnyvale either.

As for hotels, I honestly couldn't tell you where to stay, although if you're looking for something inexpensive, motel 6 is a good bet as a cheap option that is not going to be a roach motel.

Unfortunately, i've never been a tourist in the bay area, so my perspective is not quite the same as yours. Let me know if you have more questions.

Lonni

Hi all,

I may be going to San Francisco, end August or beginning September. I don't have a driver's licence and have never even driven a car before in my life (cars are very expensive here in Singapore and not that useful because public transport is quite efficient and convenient). The two times I have been to the US (Atlanta and Phoenix in 2000 and 1994 respectively), I travelled with my boss, who loved to drive. This time, I am travelling there with my wife, who also does not know how to drive. I'm wondering how to get around, since I will need to go down to Sunnyvale, in addition to San Francisco. Are taxis a good idea? How are the buses there? Also, what's a good place to stay? I remember very vaguely that Motel 6 was pretty cheap and convenient, but since I have to shuttle between Sunnyvale and San Francisco, I'm wondering what would make most sense.

Any help would be deeply appreciated !
