Well, we caught the aftermath of the big storm that provided so much
snow for you folks in the northeast. In typical Denver fashion (we
only get a major snowstorm once a decade), we got two inches of snow
and temperatures hovering in the plus/minus single digits the past two
days, but it's warming up today, and a couple of days of sunshine will
make short shrift of the snow.
As an adide: I measure the temperature by the number of clothing
layers necessary to enjoy smoking my pipe on the porch. Yesterday and
last night were five layers, and today is two layers. <grin>
Yesterday afternoon we dorve up to Colorado Springs in the bitter cold
for a warm event that restored my belief in America. Our neighbors
invited us to their daughter's wedding. We've known the family since
my daughter was in grade school. The younger daughter is the same age
as my daughter, and the girl who was being married is a few years
older.
I'm not much for religion, but I'm happy for those who have a strong
faith, and I despise those who would ban Christmas pageantry. So, the
service in a Baptist church was a little much for me. But, if you are
a believer, it's important to make an affirmation of your faith at
important times like these, and they did. The brdie and groom met each
other at a church event. The groom is a young Marine Lieutenant, and
he appeared in full dress blues. The wedding limousine was a stretch
Hummer! Afterwards the reception dinner was held at an enlisted men's
club on the Air Force Academy grounds. The best man (brother of the
groom) explained the tradition of military service in their family.
What a contrast between this young man in dress blues with close
cropped hair and the load of crap we get in the newspapers every day
saying that only pacifism can be the right and moral decision! He has
chosen to begin his adult life serving his country and proven that he
has the right stuff by qualifying as a Marine. I'm sure that "cut and
run" will not be on his training program at Quantico. If there are
more like him (and I know there are), perhaps there is hope for this
country.
I left the evening refreshed and thankful that I had taken part.
Semper Fi to this young lieutenant and his bride.

all others are superstition..
