FWIW, a neat trick to help with this is to encode part of the soname of libstdc++ in the soname of your library when you build it. The main observation is that any ABI/compiler/etc differences must be already taken care of by libstdc++'s soname versioning policy. Then you can have parallel installations of MPI libraries without too much trouble.
