I know example when BSD software was copied as base for proprietary stuff
and in this way this open source at the moment lost some critical
development resources, attention, etc..

Personally I prefer to get a changes back to community and GPLv2 works
better here. In this specific case copyright holder is Voltaire (not
Sasha K), we will need to ask there.
