Gang, I have not been happy about the verbosity of the front page for a long time, and since Alin took the initiative to do something about it, I followed up and took out all the text and made it very lean.
Now, Alin has also been using NEWS a lot, so I put "Latest News" on the front page very prominently, but it requires better "Titles" in the future, since the "Excerpt" style is IMHO very messy. The "menu" at the side is pathetic and should be part of the template and on all pages, but editing that is real hard work. If someone is interested; it is nested Velocity templates that are not formatted... give me a shout if you want to help out.
