IMHO, pax-web should use the same default as the "keytool" shipped with the JDK. For Linux/Java5 that is $HOME/.keystore and with the option to override primarily from commandline. If override is from pom, then I think URLs should be allowed, where the file:abc/def.keystore would be relative to the pom.
