In its Maven 3.0 effort the Maven guys have rewritten the artifact resolution
as a separated component that will evolve in the future to support osgi. As
this is a maven team supported library it will be better to have a url handler
based on mercury instead of our own way of finding this artifacts.
To make a distinction between the two the new protocol should use the "maven:"
scheme. Also it should use the ":" GAV separator.
