Well, according to maven output, yes, only 0.5.3 is being used.
Just to be sure, I even deleted the version from my local cache so
that maven downloaded it again from the ops4j repo.

Are you sure that there's only one ops4j-base-lang with version 0.5.3?
0.4.0 does not have NullArgumentException.validateNotEmpty method.
