I tried launching it manually:

sh-4.1# /usr/bin/ail_initdb &
[1] 1647
[AIL_INITDB][D][main,214] AIL_INITDB : 0
debug level init 1(1)

Thanks,

Is it not in the path /usr/bin?

One way to proceed forward is to debug menu-daemon. It launches ail_initdb -
system("/usr/bin/ail_initdb"). Does this call ever return, and if so, what is
the value of ret?

i have no idea what you have running and how from what point - the "ui" comes
from the "menu screen" (menu daemon) app... the wm's own ui has basically been
 turned off.
