Hi,

As a volunteer at the Tizen table on the EFL stand during FOSDEM (30-31 Jan 2016), I would like to provide feedback from my personal point of view. I guess that people who were unable to visit the event might be interested.

According to me our Tizen demos went really well. The demos showed by the crew from Poland were awesome and they attracted a lot of attention. Philippe "RzR" Coval's IoT demo with Tizen and IoTivity was also very popular. Even children visited the stand and enjoyed turning on and off a fan remotely.

I was bringing a DIY tablet with Raspberry Pi 2 and 7" display as well as a DIY laptop with HummingBoard (i.MX6 SoC) and a Motorola lapdock. As expected, there was a lot of buzz around Tizen on Raspberry Pi and I was frequently asked about the hardware graphics acceleration in Wayland / Weston.

Ben, thank you for the stickers and beverage coasters. People liked them a lot and we ran out of freebies quite fast. Some of the visitors were asking for (free) t-shirts. We have to keep this in mind for 2017 ;)

The Tizen/EFL booth was situated on the first floor of building K alongside with a lot of booths of other GNU / Linux distributions. We had much more hardware than anyone else around. Btw it was funny that most of the people were calling any development board Raspberry Pi no matter if it was actually a Minnowboard MAX, HummingBoard or Odroid :)

On Saturday we had the traditional Tizen community dinner. We gathered about 20-25 people there, including several newcomers. I hope that we will be able to keep them in our community. Philippe, it is great that you have started monthly meetings in IRC.

Philippe Coval (RzR) and I had a talk on Sunday at the Embedded dev room. In my opinion it went well and there were a lot of questions. The slides are available here:

In my opinion, the general feedback about Tizen from FOSDEM was very positive. As a FOSDEM follow up, I am happy to see this article about the port for Raspberry Pi. It highlights the usage of the Yocto Project and Openemedded in Tizen:

FOSDEM visitors were happy to see both real Tizen products which are available on the market and DIY devices. Among open source developers there is still a demand for a smartphone with GNU / Linux distribution with unlocked bootloader that can be used as both a developer device and a regular phone, for example something like the old Nokia N900 or N9.

Honestly, during the event we also received a few negative comments. The worst comment came from Twitter. Some people advised me to ignore it but I decided to get in touch with the guy. After a short public discussion it seems that as a customer of a Tizen smart TV he is not happy with the UI/UX.

Best regards, Leon
