This can be done with a simple select. But from time to time this select will become 
too long. I made the attached script to solve this.

It creates automagically a table ndocs where lies a single record: the number of 
indexed documents.
Launch it regularly to update and use this table in your WWW pages. It will be much 
faster.

Current script speed: 46s to update ndocs when database contains 469750 indexed URLs
on a PC with a Duron 800, 30 GB UDMA100 HD under RedHat 6.2 and 128 MB RAM.
