Petr,

Thanks for your interest in Chandler!

We are currently working on a Preview release of Chandler, due out this spring. This release is primarily targeted at small workgroups collaborating on shared calendars and tasks. Initially we will have some experimental email support but this is primarily so that users can send and receive event and task notifications. We will also have the ability for users to get email into Chandler from POP or iMAP accounts but this is mainly to support calendaring and task management and not meant for high-volume email management. The longer term vision of Chandler is to be a full-fledged email client with many of the features you have described, but we are not quite there yet.

So in brief, Chandler Preview won't be able to replace Outlook. However, we are hoping that small workgroups will try using it as a complement to the email clients they use today. Our hope is that over time, Chandler will prove to be more effective than email for shared task management and collaborative information management. Additionally, although we aren't really shooting for a target of interop with Exchange, we are certainly interested in collaborating with developers who are interested in that goal.

As far as migrating data is concerned, Chandler supports the ability to import Calendar data in the iCalendar(.ics) format. I know there are several tools available to export calendar data from MS Outlook in this format. Eventually we will support task as well as address book migration but for the short-term, we are handling calendar data only.

We have just launched a new users mailing list which is ideal for asking these types of questions. You can subscribe at...

For following the project more closely, we also have a design list http://lists.osafoundation.org/mailman/listinfo/design where we discuss features, planning and goals. For more specific information on Preview and the features we intend to support, you can have a look at our planning page on the wiki http://wiki.osafoundation.org/ Projects/ZeroPointSevenPlanning.

Cheers,
Sheila

Hi,

I have just found the Chandler project and I am
reading the various documentation. I am very
interested in it. I like the intention and also
the used technology. If possible, I would like
to use it in my environment. For that, I need
some clarification.

I am working in a small software company and the
working environment is based on MS Windows
Small Bussiness Server 2003 with MS Exchange
and Windows XP workstations with MS Outlook.
I cannot change it.

My first question is: Is this the correct mailing
list to ask the following questions?

2) Is it possible to use Chandler as is instead
of MS Outlook? I am using Outlook 2003 only in very
simplistic way -- sending and receiving mail,
using the default spam filter and the rules to
move the incoming mail into folders on my local
disk. (Moreover, the rules magically stopped
to be launched automatically.) So, the core
of the question is if Chandler can replace the
Outlook and communicate with MS Exchange.

3) Is there a migration tool from MS Outlook to
Chandler? (Moving stored posts from Outlook's
repository, accessing the address book, etc.)

Just now, I am the first here to use the Chandler.
I need to use individually first and to decide,
whether others may benefit from its usage.
If it proves to be useful replacement as a mail
client, I will try to penetrate it to the rest of
the company.

I have some plans and vision with Chandler.
The ideal would be if they fit with the company
interests.

Thanks for your time and experience,
  Petr Prikryl (pepr)
