Surprisingly, that did no good at all. Neither did re-installing Firefox. What did work, was to zorch the whole Firefox profile folder, uninstall Firefox, then re-install the whole mess. I sacrificed all my bookmarks, profile information, list of sites that are permitted to do pop-ups, and probably saved passwords. But I got solvent back - so it was all worth it :) (I am sure I can recover all those things, since I didn't actually zorch the folder, I just hid it away somewhere).
