In case you don't know, there's the geonames.org ontology, dealing
also with more that 6M places (lat / long + various infos as
sub-places, wikipedia links ...), fetched from various sources [1]

http://www.geonames.org/ontology/

They also offer a webservice to get RDF description of such places [2].
