I encountered this behavior when I copied an exhibit using the "file..save" menu option on an exhibit (which saved a postprocessed version of the page) instead of downloading the file directly. The effect was caused by the browser briefly showing the data which had _previously_ been rendered into the page using exhibit, then invoking the javascript that was supposed to run the exhibit, which broke because (my local copy of) the page had its lenses and views rewritten during the original visualization so they no longer worked.
