Glad you're finding our software useful!

I think it should be possible to use other date systems. The dinosaurs 
example
    http://simile.mit.edu/timeline/examples/dinosaurs/dinosaurs2.html
shows that you can even use Timeline in the unit of million of years. 
However, you will need to do some Javascript programming. Take a look at 
the Geochrono extension to Timeline:
    http://simile.mit.edu/timeline/api/ext/geochrono/scripts/
I'm not very familiar with the idiosyncrasies of the other date systems 
that you want, but I think you just need to implement a new "Unit" and a 
new "Labeller".

Let me know if that's sufficient to get you started.
