Actually - wouldn't it be easier in this regard? By having a vertical timeline, text would flow perpendicular to the time axis. So an event at time T would only have it's text in that time "span". Whereas now the marker is at the time, but the text covers future or past time. This is something I'd be interested in seeing. As the original author pointed out, the ability to have a sidebar of a timeline would be very nice.
