I think I'll explore Brian's suggestion about graying out the filtered
out facet values (those with zero counts), as that requires a lot less
work than supporting animation properly :-)
There are other kinds of facet. I have been pointed to this page for
some examples:

(They also go with graying out zero count facet values.)
And David Karger has mentioned wanting a tag cloud facet...
Regarding the check boxes in Stefano's message, I've been trying to
think of ways to make them automatically adapt to the background of the
hosting page. Right now they are solid images, so they simply can't
adapt. Translucent PNGs would be better, but are still limited. I'd
avoid using <canvas> as that is costly.
