My suggestion would be to use right-click popup menu to give options for
more powerful things like negation.  Using different icons in the
check-box could show the different states.

There's no support for that yet, although there have been similar 
requests in the past. The challenge is not in the query implementation, 
but rather in the user interface. Right now I don't have any good 
solution for supporting negation without making the facet look too busy 
and confusing. Do you have any suggestion?

with us (or put it up on our wiki as an example). We're always on the 
look out for variety in the use cases of our tools.
