Hi all. I'm writing in my role as SIMILE project manager with the
intent of assuring that we keep everybody aware of what's happening.
The SIMILE Project's current round of funding runs out in June.
This note is to give some feel for how we think that transition might
play out. This is all the natural progression of things. Change is
good.

We expect another round of the SIMILE project but particulars are still
in development. We are having a fun time sorting through our options.
That said we know that the transition will provide people and code bases
a chance to change and move around.

We are extremely proud of the number of things we've got under
our belts. There are dozens of extremely useful code bases in the
source code repository. We hope to shift some of these around to
improve the community dynamics. For example we intend to move some
of the lighter weight tools, for example Timeline, off of MIT
servers. We want to enable a more open and equitable community
to form around these tools. Other code bases will remain closely
tied to the next round of the SIMILE project.

The natural progression of people's careers coupled with this transition
will lead to some significant staff changes. Communicating the details
of those is obviously the responsibility of the the individual involved
and presumably they will do that as they see is appropriate.

MIT is deeply entangled in these tools. For example take a look at
Picker <http://picker.mit.edu/>. We are actively spinning up some
systems here based on Longwell, though it's premature to announce
those. We have some cool stuff in in the basement we hope to be
dragging out into the sunlight real soon now. So there is no reason
to be concerned that there won't be contributions from folks at MIT
going forward. What we hope to achieve is a more diverse community
at both the institutional and individual levels of contribution.

Finally we expect to be involved in the Google Summer of Code this
year, more details to follow.

Feel free to ask questions, public or private!
