I highly recommend O'Reilly's "Learning XML"  book by
Erik Ray.  It's incredibly well-written.  I'm using it as background
material for a book on writing on XMLC.

Also... it amazes me how few people actually read the w3c
documents.... HTML, XML, DOM... they are very well
structured documents, hyperlinks and all, and an excellent
source of historical info as well.
