Glen,
There are a number of ASF members and committers who are involved in the Subversion project. This has been well known since at least 2001. Every year at ApacheCon there has been a presentation on Subversion. Many of us have been waiting for Subversion to be ready, and this pre-dates Greg's chairmanship.
There are a number of technical reasons why Subversion is preferable to CVS. Please remember that the people who are running the ASF infrastructure are volunteers, in addition to be developers on Apache projects. Anything that we can do to ease the burden on these folks is a benefit to the entire foundation. Of course more volunteers to help with infrastructure tasks would be good too.

Dirk-Willem,
I think it should be noted, for those unaware, that the ASF Chairman is a team member on the Subversion project. (http://www.lyra.org/greg/)
Even if we're not being forced into SVN, this is something the Apache teams should be informed of.

-> Do not panic.
-> There is no ASF driven push (yet) for this move, no deadlines, no forcing.
