I suggested earlier: it would be sufficient for me if it only renders it like 
<x /> if the XSD prohibits children and character data. When it may contain 
children or character data, I think it is alright if it renders it like 
<x></x>. Then you can deduct the rendering procedure from the XSD.

We mostly use a combination of Pyhton, C++ and Labview here to control our 
experiments. Our latest experiment (Magnum) runs almost entirely on Python:
