The REV value refers to the "git revision". Each commit in git can be
expressed as a SHA-1 hash. If you call for instance "git log" you see
something like:

  commit b148a772b1319866ff201dc6f1ac4929a24e58ac
  Author: foo bar <foo....@trashmail.com>
  Date:   Fri Feb 6 15:43:36 2015 +0100

The string behind "commit" in the first line is this hash-sum.
