If you want to do interactive queries,
you can use gfClient.  But then you'll need
to install a gfServer instance.  That
will read the file into memory creating
a db index.

There is no way to "save off a db index",
but using the compressed .2bit format
helps both gfServer and standalone blat load up faster.
