Download the compressed gene_info file from ncbi's ftp location,
ftp://ftp.ncbi.nih.gov/gene/DATA/gene_info.gz

Execute the gunzip command on the downloaded file
gunzip gene_info.gz

First column is the taxonomy ID, for human it is 9606
Second column is the entrez-gene-id
Third column is the gene symbol
Fifth column are the gene synonyms.
