Hi John, You can get the name of a track table from the Genome Browser in a couple of ways. For simple tracks, you can hover over the name of the track on the main Browser page (http://genome.ucsc.edu/cgi-bin/hgTracks), and you will see the track name in the URL displayed at the bottom of the frame in FireFox/Chrome/etc. The other way is to select the track in the Table Browser (http://genome.ucsc.edu/cgi-bin/hgTables) and then hit the "describe table schema" button.
For UCSC Genes, you should use "type=knownGene".
