For our rpath variant, the compatibility layer exists between glibc and
gcc, while for the libc variant the one exists between linux kernel and
glibc.  The latter interface is more stable, and requires less
housekeeping patches.

What version is your Gentoo Penguin's portage?  All the versions of
portage in tree supports --prefix.
