Michael, I don't think you should be trying to run startx at all. In fact, I think you already have one x running, so why run another one? This is typically one such thing that needs "root" privileges, and most likely you can also just use as-is from the host system.
Why won't chromium start for you? You had it emerged, hadn't you?
