However one thing I forgot to add to my email was the profile I'm using :S

ls -l /etc/make.profile
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 37 Mar 31 03:16 /etc/make.profile -> /usr/portage/profiles/hardened/amd64/


From what you have told me, I can only assume that the hardened profile for amd64 is set to use multilib.

I could compare the 2005.0/no-multilib profile to the hardened profile and see what the differences are, perhaps I can create my own new profile.

Unless there is another way?

IF you try to run emerge -pv gcc it will show you (-multilib) because 2005.0 is forcefully multilib.

If you want a pure 64-bit system you must switch profile to 2005.0/no-multilib.
