It may not matter for you, but nvidia drivers are closed source (at least they used to be), whereas ati's are open.
ATI's drivers certainly are NOT open. There /are/ open drivers for <r300 series cards,
and experimental reverse-engineered ones for r300 cards. But the drivers provided
by ATI are closed.
Having said that I have always had better luck with nvidia drivers ;)

I don't know. amd64 ATI drivers have worked well for me. Probably not blazing speed, but certainly way better than the TNT2 I was using before! Have had absolutely no problems with my current Radeon 9550. In the end I think this choice probably comes down to value-for-money not pain-per-install.

I'd go for any nvidia using the nvidia-glx drivers. There was a time
when I tried using ATI under Linux, but it was the world's largest PITA
(out of date drivers, really horrible xinerama multiple monitor support,
lockups) that I quickly went back to nVidia. Note that you could use an
ancient GeForce2 and it will still work fine (especially if your 3d use
is limited to OpenGL screensavers :))

I am finally replacing the ancient video card on my gentoo box. Any half decent card on the market today will be quick enough for my needs, since I don't really game (much).
So, which card works (including 3D) on gentoo amd64 with the least amount of pain? Any recommendations or warnings?
advthanksance,
