I was having the same problem with 2.6.12-r1. I don't think it was/is the kernel as I reverted to 2.6.11.x that was stable for months and it continued to happen. I was guessing that it was Xscreensaver that caused it since my machine happened to always lock up on the same screen saver. In any event, something was updated along the way (Xscreensaver?) and the problem disappeared. I've been running 2.6.12-gentoo-r2 for four days now with no problem.
